As the international community moves towards the UN Summit on the Future and the finalization of the Global Digital Compact later this year, this event will feature a panel discussion on the ethical implications of AI, addressing both challenges and opportunities. It hopes to begin to identify some fundamental values that could orient the regulation of AI technologies towards the dignity of the human person and the pursuit of the common good.

This event is an initial response to Pope Francis’ recent call, in his message for the World Day of Peace, for States to work ‘together in order to adopt a binding international treaty that regulates the development and use of artificial intelligence in its many forms’.

It will explore the following questions:

How can we ensure digital technologies benefit development, rather than increasing inequalities among and within countries?

What are the medium and long-term challenges and opportunities posed by AI?

What potential impact could AI have on our societies, peace and security?

The event will feature a panel discussion, that includes renowned experts in the field of Al, ethics, peace-building, and social justice, followed by a Q&A session. Participation in person is encouraged, although it will be possible to follow the event virtually, pending registration and approval by the organisers. There will be interpretation in English and French.

Panel discussion featuring:

  1. Ms. Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunications Union
  2. Fr. Paolo Benanti, Pontifical Gregorian University, Member of the UN Secretary-General's Advisory Board on Artificial Intelligence
  3. Prof. Dominique Lambert, University of Namur and Member of the Royal Academy of Belgium
  4. Prof. Emmanuel Brochier, Dean of the IPC - Facultés Libres de Philosophie et de Psychologie, Paris
  5. Fr. Eric Salobir, President of the Executive Committee of the Human Technology Foundation and Founder of OPTIC
